Making Pumpkin Puree from Scratch and Roasting Seeds

October 4, 2019 by Sylvia Rose 2 Comments

Making pumpkin puree at home doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it’s easier than you might think. Preheat your oven, gut your pumpkins, and get ready to cozy up to fall with these minimal waste pumpkin practices…

making pumpkin puree for the freezer

Making pumpkin puree is one of my favourite ways to ring in autumn.

The days are cooler. Green leaves adopt the colours of fire before falling to cold concrete sidewalks and pavement, blanketing lawns with a cozy comforter for the winter season.

The nights are cold and I can see my breath in the brisk morning air, my car windows weeping with condensation.

I don’t dare go outside without a jacket anymore.

My yearnings for gallons of old-fashioned lemonade and ice cream sandwiches are now cravings for tea, spicy baked goods, and everything pumpkin.

THE EASIEST CREPE RECIPE EVER

Classic ham and cheese crepes are one of my favourite go-to breakfast options, along with kefir pancakes, fermented steel-cut oats, and Croque-Madames.

The crepe batter is a cinch to make and the options for fillings are seemingly endless.

I also have a lot of fun making crepes because I get to flip them in the pan, which you can see me demonstrate in the recipe video. This is particularly entertaining for me when I have guests over for breakfast because I feel like I’m putting on a show for them.

Have you ever tried flipping anything while you cook? Julia Child said it best about flipping, “You just have to have the courage of your convictions”. See for yourself!

Victory Borscht: An Easy Oil-Free Wartime Recipe

September 27, 2019 by Sylvia Rose 12 Comments

Victory Borscht is a winner in more ways than one. This jewel-coloured beauty of a soup is rich in flavour and completely oil-free. Let’s dive into the history behind this simple, hearty recipe and then learn how to make it yourself!

A GLIMPSE INTO WARTIME FRUGALITY

Let’s rewind to a time often glamorized for its style, gallantry, and grace: World War II. Although people lived with an elegance we rarely see today, they also lived with scarcity. Here, in a world full of abundance, we often overlook how resourceful our great-grandmothers had to be.

Frugality is a word that makes some folks cringe, but during WWII, it was a necessity, not an option. The women of that era didn’t have the luxury of being wasteful—they had to be creative and self-sufficient. Learning from them can teach us valuable skills we can apply today.

Quick and Easy Escargot Appetizers

September 20, 2019 by Sylvia Rose 7 Comments

Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no denying that escargots are a classic appetizer. If you’re a fan of cheesy garlic slugs, then you’ll want to learn how to make these quick and easy escargot appetizers!

LOVE AT FIRST SNAIL

The first time I ever had escargots, I was four.

I didn’t understand that they were snails, but even if I had, I wouldn’t have cared a stitch. They were cheesy, garlicky, chewy and delicious. What wasn’t to love?

From that moment on escargots were my favourite appetizer, but they were hard to come by for a German-Canadian child. Because there was a paucity of snails in my youth, I elevated them up in my mind as something to be sought after.

There’s something elegant about being served escargots, don’t you think? After all, they’re a delicacy!

APPLE TURNOVERS FOR WHEN AUTUMN TUGS AT YOUR HEART

Few things get me as excited as the change in seasons.

Whether it’s the first dusting of snow; the budding trees in spring; or the heady fragrance of lilac; the transition into autumn has its own magic.

It’s when the garden is bursting with good things to eat and preserve.

Dusk comes earlier, the grasshoppers fly, and the crickets give their last encore.

When the calendar flips open to September and school is back in session, the apple orchards start opening for business.

The time has come to get cozy.

The candles come out, the tea kettle sees more action, and you have a yearning to bake.
